University basketball and professional league

Since its inception in the early twentieth century, people have enjoyed playing basketball. In fact, professional and college basketball in the United States has gained many supporters across the country. The National Basketball League was the first professional league in the game. It was formed in 1898 to protect players from exploitation and to promote safety rules for the game. One of the first and best professional teams was the Original Celtics, formed in 1915 in New York City. They participated in as many matches as 150 pr. Season and was the first basketball team until 1936. Founded in 1927, the Harlem Globetrotters is an exhibition team that focuses on stylized tricks in ball handling.

In 1949, two professional leagues, the National Basketball League (formed in 1937) and the Basketball Association of America (formed in 1946) merged to create the National Basketball Association (NBA). The NBA is now considered the premier basketball league in the United States and is also known worldwide.
