Wedding dress traditions from around the world

Have you ever wondered where getting married and celebrating a wedding originated? Why were we a special wedding dress? The first civilization to recognize the idea of marriage in law was ancient Egypt. Then it wasn't long before other civilizations soon followed and began creating wedding laws and rules in their own cultures. Getting married was seen as a stabilizing and positive factor in society. It was the Roman Empire that transmitted the word "marriage", which means marriage.

Thousands of weddings take place every day of the year around the world. Many wedding traditions have been formed over the years and have become personal and exclusive to certain cultures and religions. However, there is a particular element that occurs in the vast majority of weddings and is a key feature, this being the wedding dress.

Wearing a white wedding dress has been the traditional color a bride would wear on her wedding day at some point in the UK, however wedding dresses have not always been white. A bride would simply have put on her 'best dress'. When Queen Victoria married Albert in 1840, it became a very influential wedding day more than any other, and after her wedding photograph was published, many brides wanted to follow in her footsteps. She chose to incorporate a bit of lace into her wedding gown that she appreciated, and the color of this dictated the color of her gown: white. Although many brides continued to marry dresses of different colors, white remains a popular color choice, as it is seen to symbolize virginity. "Custom has decided, from the earliest ages, that white is the most appropriate shade, whatever the material. It is an emblem of the purity and innocence of childhood, and the immaculate heart that now yields to the chosen one." it is a quotation from Godey's Lady's Book, 1949.
Throughout the world, brides from various cultures marry in a variety of all colors of the rainbow. Different colors have different meanings, however, universally, white is commonly known for its purity, black is for death, and purple and gold for royalty. Bright yellow is a color used in Morocco, as it is believed to ward off the evil eye, and good luck is received in choosing to use the color of the plants: green. African brides represent their villages by incorporating patterns and colors into their wedding dress and Chinese women often wear red as their Wedding Hanbok or alternatively choose red wedding shoes as it is their color of joy and good luck.

White is a color used throughout the world by Jewish brides to be and in Israel, as it is seen to represent spiritual purity and clarity. The color blue is believed to embody mystical powers. The tradition of the white wedding dress continues in Japan, where many brides choose to wear a white silk wedding kimono that is lined in red. This is to symbolize happiness and a new beginning.
