Travel photography - 8 important things to remember

Every place you visit has its own special atmosphere. If you want your travel photos to look exceptionally good, try to capture the unique character and features of this place. Snapshots should not only trigger your memories, but also easily communicate to others the captivating vim and vigor of the place.
In terms of travel photography, here are 8 important tips to help you take excellent digital photos.

1. Buy a high quality camera and learn the basics of photography

A good quality digital camera will definitely help you take better pictures. Instead of a point and shoot camera, buy a SLR camera or a DSLR with a 300mm to 800mm lens. In addition to the photographic equipment, your bag must have memory cards, filters, external flash unit, lens cap, cleaning equipment, power adapter and tripod or monopod. If the batteries are rechargeable, you will need a recharger. Otherwise, you should also store a set of batteries.
To click on excellent shots, you do not require any special training in travel photography. You just need to know the basics, like how to set the shutter speed or how to change the aperture size. You should also learn about different camera modes, ISO, silhouettes, filter usage, etc.

2. Collect as much information about the destination as possible

If photography is the sole purpose of your trip, gather as much information as you can before reaching the destination. You need to know about the best time to travel, main modes of transport, main attractions, events not to be missed, and things to avoid. When you are done with your research, prepare a list of available photographic opportunities on site.

3. Look beyond the main tourist attraction

Travel photographers are often so obsessed with the tourist attraction that they do not notice other photo-worthy subjects. Keep your eyes open as you travel. Sometimes objects near the main attraction are more interesting and photogenic.

4. Natural light vs. artificial light

Using artificial light sources usually makes photographers seem unreal. For overwhelming shots always rely on natural light. Get the most out of sunlight, and don't hesitate to use filters, reflectors, lens caps and fill flash techniques when the sun gets too hot. If the subject is not well lit, use flash freely. By using flash diffusers, night mode, and fine-tuning the camera's exposure settings, you can easily prevent occurrences of flash blowouts.

5. Frame composition is essential

Every frame you record must be top-notch. So before pressing the shutter button, carefully examine and evaluate the scene. Aside from the topic, look at the background. Make sure that secondary focus points do not overshadow the subject. Everything you want to include in the frame must be clearly visible.

6. Try to interact and connect with people

To capture sincere portraits, you must openly interact with the people. Close interaction will help build trust and it will be relatively easy for you to convince them to look through your lens.

7. Do not count the pictures

8. Avoid traveling with a group

If you travel with a group, your creative freedom will be drastically limited. You do not get a chance to pause, look around and evaluate the various perspectives of the topic. Additionally, your photos are not exclusive as all members shoot the same buildings and people.
